Why do you need disk to disk backup?

The ins and outs of D2D.

Backing up your data and files has become an important step to ensure your company’s files are safe from natural disasters and human error. But the process for backing up computer files has come a long way. More and more companies are using hard disks for their back up needs instead of copying data files to tapes. This is known as disk to disk backup or D2D.

Disk to disk backup is the process of making copies of your data that can be used later to restore systems after any occurrences of data loss. To implement data storage systems is the best answer to this. The majority of computer users has at one time or another experienced data loss, but the annoyance and frustrations of such a situation can be multiplied when you are talking about data that is lost or corrupted for an entire company, particularly if your industry is heavily regulated by federal laws.

Backup procedures are often included as part of a disaster recovery plan. Because hard disks have been improving in technology and cost over the years, it’s no surprise that disks are one of the more competitive and affordable ways to back up files. The advantages of using hard disks include: they are easy to use, readily available and can be connected to various local platforms like USB, eSATA, Ethernet or iSCSI.

Disk to disk backup can also be used if your data centers are spread out across the country or at different office locations. Disk to disk backup is often times installed as a Virtual Tape Library or VTL. This data storage virtualization option allows for greater storage and consolidation and provides for data Deduplication. Data deduplication had previously been dependent on hardware appliances, but now backup software often includes these features.

For some, daily and weekly backups are done to ensure safe-keeping of your data. For D2D, you need to back up data to a disk-based device, like a SATA array. This allows you to more easily have access to certain files more easily, although the actually process of backing up files could be slower.

With Nexsan’s disk archiving tools, the storage architecture is reduced by as much as 66 percent. Data is migrated from tier 1 primary storage to more cost-effective and efficient tier 2 managed storage achieves. The great thing about Nexan’s system is your data is protected every step of the way. From audit histories to specific steps to curb instances of deletions or changes, your data is protected and in compliance with regulatory guidelines. Nexsan’s solutions comply with a variety of governmental regulatory requirements including HIPPA, SOX and SEC-17. That means your don’t have to worry about keeping your data safe the next time you back up your files.
